NUGS GENERAL SECRETARY DESERVES COMMENDATION

Master Anthony Kwame Julius, the General Secretary for the National Union of Ghana Student-NUGS needs to be commended for his dexterity in coming out with a presser to substantiate and dissociate the Union from the claims made by the President of the Union, Yiadom Boakye earlier this week to endorse the Budget Statement and Economic Policy for the 2022 Financial Year. The National Secretariat together with the office of the executive committee had issued a presser to disclaim or disown the president and his cohorts press conference, that those views and opinions expressed by them do not represent those of the union, and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

Earlier this week, thus, on Wednesday, the Minister for finance had presented a budget statement before parliament for consideration, adoption and approval for the 2022 financial and fiscal year. The content in the budget had received a backlash and condemnation from the public, especially on the introduction of the electronic transaction levy, E-Levy, which consisted of Momo tax, bank transactions tax and inward remittances. It had also featured in the budget numerous taxes like the  5% national stabilization and recovery levy, 5% vat flat rate, 15%chargess on government services, UPPF 164% increment, 200% increment in bost margin, 233% increment in fuel marking margin, and 5% increment in price stabilization and recovery levy among others. This has generated heated debates in Parliament which had occasioned the outright rejection of the budget by the minority after the majority had walked out from the house.

Father Anthony granting an interview on Joy TV and speaking on Metro TV had why NUGS is not in support of the budget. He had said the majority of the people who transact business using momo are students, so the 1.75% tax will affect students. In addition, he touched on the 15% increase in fees as students would witness an astronomical increase in their fees. He told Metro News' anchor that under normal circumstances, the president was supposed to have conveyed a meeting via the secretariat on the issue under discussion and solicited their views on the matter. He refused to do so and later copied them after his press breeder, Father Anthony had lamented.

Anthony was once a defeated SRC Presidential candidate of the University of Ghana. He never gave up on his dreams of becoming a student politician. He serves as an inspiration to many students who want to participate in student politics on campus. He is a gem. He is marked for his eloquence in the language of the Queen and his command of the English Language. He has been praised or exalted for his stance on the matter by many students on whose behalf or ticket he serves, particularly at the University of Ghana. Unlike Julius Kwame Anthony, his boss Yiadom Boakye received condemnation from many students across Ghana, most especially his alumnus, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
